Hiroshi Hirao connected for a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning Sunday to power the Seibu Lions to a 13-6 victory over the Lotte Marines.
Hirao, who had only three homers last season, gave the Lions a commanding 10-5 lead at Chiba Marine Stadium with his third homer of the season.
Rookie Shuichiro Osada picked up the win after coming on in the fourth and holding the Marines scoreless over 1 2/3 innings.
Infielder Kazuo Matsui got the Lions rolling with a solo homer in the first inning off Lotte starter Shingo Ono and Hiroyuki Takagi added another solo shot in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring for Seibu.
Buffaloes 8, Fighters 7
At Tokyo Dome, Koichi Isobe belted a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning and Osamu Hoshino added a solo homer in the sixth inning as Kintetsu edged Nippon Ham.
Shinichi Kato picked up the win after holding the Fighters to three runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. Akira Okamoto recorded the final two outs for the save.
Angel Echevarria connected for a solo homer in the third and added a two-run blast in the sixth in a losing cause.
Hawks 7, BlueWave 5
In Kobe, Nobuhiko Matsunaka connected for a solo homer as Daiei scored three runs in the top of the eighth on its way to a victory over Orix at Yahoo BB Stadium.
Takeshi Yamasaki homered twice for the BlueWave, but it wasn’t enough, as Orix dropped to 0-2 under American manager Leon Lee, who replaced Hiromichi Ishige on April 23.
Hawks right-hander Hayato Terahara (3-0) gave up three runs on eight hits over six innings but held on for the win.
Swallows 4, Dragons 1
Kevin Hodges (2-2) combined with closer Shingo Takatsu on a two-hitter for the win as Yakult beat Chunichi at Jingu Stadium.
Hodges gave up a run in the first inning but held the Dragons scoreless over eight innings. He helped his own cause at the plate, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1.
All-time saves leader Takatsu retired the side in the ninth and earned his fifth save.
Carp 6, Tigers 2
At Koshien Stadium, Kojiro Machida belted a two-run homer and Yoshiyuki Ishihara added a grand slam as Hiroshima scored six runs in the first inning.
Giants 10, BayStars 3
At Yokohama Stadium, Roberto Petagine drove in the go-ahead run and Yomiuri erupted for all 10 runs in the top of the eighth inning on its way to a comeback victory over the BayStars.
