The top three long shots paid out 1,449,660 yen on a 100 yen wager at a horse race Monday, the highest return in a race organized by the Japan Racing Association.

All combinations of 11-7-16, the horses that finished 1-2-3 respectively in a race at the Nakayama Racecourse in Chiba Prefecture, broke the previous record of 836,510 yen set at the Kokura Racecourse in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on Aug. 11.

The highest return in the history of legal sports gambling in Japan is 9,752,820 yen earned for the top three finishers in order at Tokyo's Oi Racecourse in an August race last year.
