Leftover tickets for games in the knockout stages of the World Cup soccer finals in Japan will be sold online and by phone the day before the matches, the Japanese World Cup organizing committee (JAWOC) said Thursday.

The decision made late Wednesday to sell tickets for six games in Japan in the Round of 16, or second round, and for quarterfinal matches on June 21-22 comes after an agreement was reached among JAWOC, soccer’s world governing body FIFA, its ticketing agent British firm Byrom PLC, and the South Korean World Cup organizing committee (KOWOC).

The procedure will be the same as for first-round matches — JAWOC will sell half the available tickets by phone and FIFA will sell the other half via its FIFA World Cup Ticketing Bureau Web site, which is operated by Byrom, according to JAWOC officials.

In addition to the remaining unsold tickets that had been offered abroad, leftover “team-specific tickets” will also be sold, officials said. These tickets are those that cater to fans wanting to purchase tickets for matches featuring specific teams.

The officials said unsold tickets will be sold by phone while leftover team-specific tickets will be sold online. Buyers of team-specific tickets can ask for a refund if their chosen team loses and fails to progress to the next stage.

Officials said they have also decided to allot 1,000 tickets to the national football associations of teams that proceed to the second round and the quarterfinals, in consideration of nationals from countries with a high demand for tickets, such as Ireland.

Telephone ticket sales for the match Saturday at Niigata Stadium Big Swan will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, while tickets for games at Oita’s Big Eye stadium and Kobe Wing Stadium on Sunday and Monday, respectively, will be sold from 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Ticket sales for games at Miyagi Stadium on Tuesday, Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa on June 21, and Osaka’s Nagai Stadium on June 22 will begin at 4 p.m. Monday, June 20 and June 21, respectively.

The contact number for tickets to all of the games except for Monday’s match in Kobe is 0570-00-0091. The number for telephone ticket sales for the game in Kobe is 0570-00-0062.

The FIFA Web site address for ticket sales is www.fifatickets.com.
