A goal by Samuel Kuffour in the 19th minute of extra time gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory over Boca Juniors and the Toyota Cup at Tokyo's National Stadium on Tuesday night.
Kuffour dedicated his 109th minute winning goal to his daughter. "The goal was meant for my daughter Godiwa and wife Franzisca. I am very happy," he said.
An ill-tempered match, in which Boca Juniors had striker Marcelo Delgado sent off in first-half injury time for a second bookable offense, saw Bayern provide most of the attacking while failing to take advantage of its numerical supremacy during regulation time.
A capacity crowd of 53,000 was subjected to a match that had more spills than thrills with tempers flaring on both sides. The referee was forced to break up scuffles between the teams on more than one occasion.
"Kuffour raised his performance and played better and better towards the end of the game," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. "He met our expectations by scoring.
"I think we were in control compared to Boca. We were able to perform our set moves better. We didn't allow them to play their own game. We were patient and made them run a lot."
Ironically, the closest Boca came to scoring in the first half was when midfielder Juan Riquelme played a through-ball to Delgado, who appeared to dive in the penalty area, earning himself a second yellow card and his marching orders.
From then on, Boca was content to defend in numbers, hoping to catch Bayern on the counter-attack.
In the second half, Bayern pressed forward in numbers in search of the winner, using the width of the field to launch a wave of attacks on the Boca goal.
French defenders Bixente Lizarzu and Willy Sagnol worked hard down the flanks, providing ammunition for the strikers through a number of dangerous crosses which were successfully nullified by the steadfast Boca defense.
Bayern countered, bringing on 193-cm German striker Carsten Jancker in the 75th minute in an attempt to add some aerial firepower.
The move almost worked when Jancker was gifted with a free header with only 3 minutes remaining on the clock. However, he sent the ball over the bar.
The vociferous Boca fans tried to lift their team in extra-time, but with the Boca players beginning to tire, there was only going to be one winner.
It was perhaps fitting that the game would end in controversial circumstances.
A corner in the 19th minute of extra time was headed down by hardworking Thorsten Fink and in the ensuing goalmouth scramble, the ball fell to man-of-the-match Kuffour, who slotted it home from close range.
The Boca players protested vainly to the referee but the goal stood.
Bayern played the remaining minutes out without event, leaving the Boca players on the field in tears after the final whistle.
"For close to 75 minutes we played with one less player . . . and we held them," said Boca coach Carlos Bianchi. "I think it was a strange goal. Maybe they were a bit lucky. Perhaps if it was 11 on 11 we would have won."
