New Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has sought to reassure Seoul that her administration won’t undermine improved bilateral ties with South Korea amid fears on both sides that her hawkish views might put a damper on relations.

In her inaugural news conference as Japanese leader late Tuesday, Takaichi called South Korea an “important neighbor" and a “vital partner” in addressing “challenges confronting the international community” — an apparent nod to China’s growing military and economic assertiveness and North Korea’s expanding nuclear capabilities.

“I believe the importance of the Japan-South relationship is greater than ever before,” Takaichi said. “Building on the foundation established by previous governments, I would like to develop the relationship in a future-oriented and stable manner.”
