Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female leader, appointed just two women to her 18-member Cabinet on Tuesday, despite promising high levels of female representation earlier.
“Some news reports suggested that the Takaichi Cabinet would have six female ministers,” she told a news conference Tuesday night. “However, as I have stated from the beginning, I place importance on (giving everyone) an equal opportunity.”
“I have assembled a team with the right person in the right position,” she said.
