The Democratic Party for the People is increasingly looking like the Liberal Democratic Party’s most likely interlocutor for policy cooperation, and potentially an expansion of the ruling coalition, following the election of Sanae Takaichi as LDP president Saturday.
Personal ties running between their executives, policy proximity and a certain affinity between the DPP and Komeito, the LDP’s ruling coalition partner, are seen as some of the reasons.
Throughout the campaign, and after her election, Takaichi has avoided any explicit mention of potential additions to the coalition, noting it would be premature and “rude” to the potential parties. In her first news conference as party head Saturday, she hinted at the necessity of a policy agreement.
