In one televised debate after another, Liberal Democratic Party presidential candidates are failing to differentiate themselves from each other on policy.

The Japan National Press Club hosted a two-hour debate on Wednesday between the five presidential hopefuls, in which their policy stances seemed to blur together into one harmonious whole.

“Most of my policies overlap with yours,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told agriculture minister Shinjiro Koizumi, who had just explained how he plans to increase productivity and boost investments in mid- to small-size companies to achieve a sustained 1% increase in real wages.
