Uyghurs and rights advocates on Tuesday decried lame global action over a damning 2022 U.N. report detailing torture and sweeping abuses in China's Xinjiang region.

Members of China's Uyghur minority joined NGOs on the sidelines of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva to urge U.N. rights chief Volker Turk to step up pressure on Beijing.

"The U.N. rights chief should strengthen his efforts to press the Chinese government to implement U.N. recommendations," Yalkun Uluyol, the China researcher at Human Rights Watch, told diplomats gathered for the event.
