Japan cancelled hundreds of flights and advised more than 60,000 households in Kyushu to evacuate on Tuesday, as Tropical Storm Khanun, packing heavy rain and strong winds, slowly heads westwards days after raging through Okinawa.

The storm, which is projected to reach South Korea's southern coast on Thursday, is lingering in the Pacific Ocean, about 200 kilometers south of Kyushu, the Meteorological Agency said.

Another tropical storm has also emerged in the Pacific, the agency said. Tropical Storm Lan could approach the country's main island of Honshu next week, when many people are expected to travel for the Bon holidays.
