An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 shook Kumamoto Prefecture on Sunday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake, which occurred at around 9:44 p.m. with its focus at a depth of around 9 kilometers, registered a weak 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in the town of Misato, the agency said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage.
Kumamoto experienced devastating quakes in April 2016, which killed over 270 people and destroyed or partially damaged some 43,000 homes in Kumamoto and neighboring Oita prefectures.
