The government on Tuesday produced an annual action plan for tourism promotion, including a project to launch free Wi-Fi services on all shinkansen by the end of March 2019.
The free Wi-Fi services are aimed at improving convenience for visitors to the country and attracting more tourists to rural areas. The government will also aim to solve the problem of communication being cut off in tunnels by 2020.
The government has set a goal of increasing the annual number of visitors to Japan to 40 million in 2020.
Under the action plan, the government will also develop face recognition gates at airports and provide multiple language services at tourism facilities.
It will also increase the leasing of art and craft works kept in the Imperial Palace grounds to other museums and expand tours of large-scale infrastructure facilities such as undersea tunnels and underground discharge channels.
