Ever wanted to play at being superhuman? Games-players can now feel what it is like to have superpowers of a sort — and tights are optional.
A Tokyo exhibition centering on the concept of superhuman sports is offering participants a chance to overcome the limits of natural human ability.
"Bubble Jumper" is a duel between two people wrapped in air-filled vinyl bubble protectors. They wear jumping stilts on their legs and must knock the opponent over by using sumo-like body blows.
In a game called "Chariot," players race each other while pulled by self-propelled wheel.
Organized by the Superhuman Sports Society, also known as S3, the expo is running through Sunday at Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. S3 was established in June between university researchers working in digital technology. On show are six superhuman concepts. They were selected at brainstorming events, including a "superhuman sports hackathon" in July.
"We aim to develop new sports by using advanced technologies, like robotics, wearable devices and virtual reality, to let people feel superhuman," said Masahiko Inami, a Keio University professor of robotics and one of the leading figures in S3.
Such technology allows humans to develop sports that until now have only been played in video games, said Bubble Jumper co-creator Koji Kawamura, a student at Keio University.
A sport named "Hover Crosse" draws on lacrosse. Players riding Segway-like two-wheeled devices must carry a ball in a stick with a cup to place them on goal posts, while an opponent tries to knock the ball to the ground.
S3 aims to demonstrate "Made in Japan" superhuman sports to the world by the time Tokyo hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020, Inami said.
"I want to produce sports that can attract those who have had no interest in conventional sports," he said.
The Superhuman Sports Expo is part of the annual Digital Contents Expo 2015, which showcases new digital technologies and runs through Sunday. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., it is free to all.
