International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has asked Japan's organizing committee to finalize the main stadium plan for the 2020 Summer Games before the IOC meets in late July, Toshiaki Endo, the Cabinet minister in charge of hosting the Olympics, revealed Tuesday.

Endo, who was appointed to the newly created role last week, said at a news conference that the IOC boss made the request to former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, head of the Olympics organizing committee.

The central and Tokyo governments have been squabbling over how to fund the National Stadium construction, which will be more costly than initially estimated.
