An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck Hokkaido on Tuesday evening, but no tsunami alert was issued, the Meteorological Agency said.

The 6:05 p.m. quake originated in the southern Ishikari region and the focus of the quake was shallow, the agency said.

The quake registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in the town of Shiraoi and 4 in the city of Tomakomai.

Hokkaido Electric Power Co. said there were no reports of abnormalities at its Tomari nuclear power plant in southwestern Hokkaido.
