The Liberal Democratic Party proposed Tuesday that weather forecasts covering areas around the Senkaku Islands and Takeshima be provided more widely to increase public awareness about Japanese sovereignty over them, party lawmakers said.

In a set of proposals, the ruling party also called for more media coverage of weather forecasts for the Russian-held islands off Hokkaido.

The LDP Special Mission Committee on Territories plans to submit the proposals to the prime minister's office later this week.

The Senkakus in the East China Sea are claimed by China, which calls them Diaoyu. Takeshima, a couple of islets in the Sea of Japan, are controlled by South Korea but claimed by Japan. South Korea calls them Dokdo.

The LDP committee also proposed that school curriculum guidelines make a clear reference to the Senkakus and Takeshima, saying the government "should point out incorrect claims made by relevant countries and guide (pupils) to the correct views."
