The Abe administration and ruling bloc are considering a plan to raise the annual tax for motorcycle ownership as part of reforming vehicle taxes in fiscal 2014, coalition lawmakers said Friday.
The plan includes setting the minimum tax at ¥2,000 or ¥3,000, meaning owners of 50cc scooters or smaller could be taxed three times more than the current ¥1,000 a year. Owners of motorcycles bigger than 250cc could face a tax of up to ¥8,000, compared with the current ¥4,000.
