A seven-floor restaurant and shopping facility opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at the 38-story JP Tower building near Tokyo Station.
Kitte, as the 9,400-sq.-meter facility is spelled in English and katakana, opened in a ceremony attended by actress Kii Kitano and the top managers of the companies that revamped the historic building.
The dignitaries included Japan Post Co. President Shinichi Nabekura and Mitsubishi Estate Co. President Hirotaka Sugiyama.
Kitte, which means postage stamp, has 27 restaurants and 71 shops, including fashion outlets.
"We are honored to welcome customers with restaurants selected from throughout Japan," Nabekura said in his address.
A museum exhibiting 7,000 items owned by the University of Tokyo, including Egyptian mummy samples, opened inside JP Tower the same day.
JP Tower, completed last May at the site of the landmark central post office building, houses the new Tokyo Central Post Office and the head office of Japan Post Bank.
