Loggerhead turtles set records for egg production and landings at beaches around the country this year, according to the Sea Turtle Association of Japan.

A survey found that 14,632 nests and 26,139 landings by the endangered turtles were recorded this year. Both were the highest totals since the association started the survey in 1993.

The survey covered 573 beaches in 29 prefectures from Miyagi in the northeast to Okinawa. The results were released Saturday at a sea turtle protection conference in Kagoshima.

The loggerhead has been added to the endangered species lists of the Environment Ministry and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Japan holds the only nesting sites for this species in the North Pacific region.
