Japan Post Co. will enter the parking business in early November by using post office premises in cooperation with parking lot chain operator Times24 Co.

The mail delivery arm of Japan Post Holdings Co. will start out by turning vacant lots at two post offices in the Tokyo area into unattended parking spaces with automated machines next month, officials said.

Japan Post is considering increasing the number of parking lots to more than 20 in the next few years.

People visiting the post offices will be able to park for free. All of the income from the parking business will go to Japan Post, which will pay management and maintenance fees to Times24.
