SAITAMA – The city of Saitama said starting June 1 it will offer simultaneous translation in five languages when people who can’t speak Japanese make emergency phone calls by dialing 119.
Saitama will become the first city with a population of 500,000 or more to offer round-the-clock multilingual translation services. The languages that will be supported are Chinese, English, Korean, Spanish and Portuguese. A contracted private company will handle the translations.
