A man in his 50s was stabbed and seriously injured Monday evening while riding an escalator at Shibuya Station in central Tokyo, and the male assailant was still at large, police said.

The assailant, described as a male in his 30s or 40s and about 160 to 170 cm tall, fled the scene after the 6:15 p.m. attack on an escalator descending to the platform of Tokyo Metro Co.'s Fukutoshin Line, the police said.

Security video footage was released showing the apparent attacker on an escalator and on a platform.

The victim was stabbed on the right side of his torso and behind his right ear with a knife after he got into an argument with the attacker, who was standing beside him on the escalator descending to the platform five floors underground.

Tokyo Metro said due to the incident all services on the line were temporarily suspended, and about 26,000 commuters were affected.
