Hong Kong and Japan agreed Monday to promote the export of Japanese agricultural and food products, the territory's trading arm said.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed in Tokyo by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Japan's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry, Japanese exports will be promoted in a series of trade fairs, product magazines, online marketplaces and business-matching activities.

Gregory So, secretary for commerce and economic development, led the trade delegation to Japan, which included 120 government officials and business leaders.

The two sides kicked off the "Think Global, Think Hong Kong" campaign, which expects to draw more than 2,000 Japanese businesspeople and government officials to symposiums, food fairs and forums to be held through Saturday.

So visited an elementary school in Sendai and met with Miyagi Gov. Yoshihiro Murai to learn how the recovery from last year's earthquake and tsunami is progressing.

China and Hong Kong together account for $204 billion worth of Japan's exports, about a quarter of Japan's worldwide exports last year, according to Japanese trade statistics.
