A fishing boat that was swept away from Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, by last year's deadly tsunami has been found around 1,600 km away on a rocky stretch of Kikai Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, the coast guard said Friday.
The 5-meter-long, 0.4-ton vessel discovered Wednesday was confirmed to belong to a 64-year-old fisherman in Kesennuma based on its registration number, according to the 2nd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Miyagi.
The vessel was on shore at Kesennuma when tsunami ravaged Tohoku's coast in March 2011. Separately, a soccer ball and volleyball washed away from Iwate Prefecture were found in Alaska last month.
