The owner of a motorcycle that was swept away from Tohoku to British Columbia by the March 2011 tsunami has been identified as a resident of Yamamoto, Miyagi Prefecture, who lost three family members in the disasters.

"I was astonished that my motorcycle has been found after a year," said Ikuo Yokoyama, 29.

The 1,450cc Harley-Davidson was found in a truck container that had washed ashore on Graham Island on April 18.

The finder, Peter Mark, said he stumbled upon the container while riding his all-terrain vehicle on an isolated beach.

Authorities used the motorcycle's license plate to identify the owner.

Yokoyama recalled buying the motorcycle about four or five years ago.

"I would like to express my gratitude to the person who found the motorcycle," he said.
