A cold low-pressure system brought much snow and blustery winds to northeastern and central Japan Monday, with heavy accumulations observed in the areas hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami last year, the Meteorological Agency said.

The inclement weather may continue in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions into Tuesday, the agency said.

Among areas hit by the March disaster, Kuji, Iwate Prefecture, saw snowfall of more than 40 cm in 24 hours and Miyako, also in Iwate, saw 13 cm Monday morning.
