A photo exhibition depicting the damage and surviving children of the March 11 Tohoku disasters was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Diplomats and New York residents attended the exhibition — held shortly before the first anniversary of the disasters — featuring photos by professionals from 25 major Japanese newspapers and wire services as well as from 23 freelance photographers.

The exhibition displayed 160 photos, including one taken by Shinya Kumagai, a reporter at the daily Iwate Nippo in Iwate Prefecture, who captured on film the exact moment when massive tsunami engulfed the coastal city of Miyako, Iwate Prefecture.
