Foreign Minister Koichiro Genba has assured his Thai counterpart that Japan will offer Thailand its full support to help the country recover and start rebuilding after this year's devastating flooding.

During a phone conversation Friday night with Thailand's foreign minister, Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Genba said Japan will provide a range of assistance, including on flood control, measures to prevent infectious diseases, and rebuilding wrecked infrastructure in many parts of the country.

Surapong welcomed Genba's offer and said he looks forward to Thailand and Japan working closely togehter on the road to recovery.

Genba was scheduled to hold talks with officials in Thailand and Cambodia but pulled out last week after the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, in order to stay in Japan and monitor the unfolding events in Pyongyang.

Genba also talked with Cambodia's Hor Namhong, who doubles as the country's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, over the phone last week.
