Emperor Akihito will remain hospitalized for a while longer, as his temperature rose over the weekend and he is still coughing heavily, the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.

The extension of the 77-year-old's hospital stay will likely make it impossible for him to attend a banquet for Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema scheduled for Wednesday at the Imperial Palace.

The Emperor was admitted to University of Tokyo Hospital with bronchitis on Nov. 6. He showed signs of recovery leading to initial plans for his discharge last Friday.
