SHIZUOKA (Kyodo) Chubu Electric Power Co. staged an earthquake and disaster preparedness drill Tuesday at its Hamaoka nuclear plant in Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture, in response to the ongoing nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station.

The drill, conducted at the No. 3 reactor, which is in the final stage of regular checkups, simulated a total loss of power at the plant following a large earthquake and tsunami.

Chubu Electric, based in Nagoya, said it will restart the reactor in early April after confirming its safety.

It plans to build a breakwater higher than 12 meters around the nuclear power plant in two to three years as a tsunami measure in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, its officials said.
