NAGOYA (Kyodo) Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura aims to field at least five candidates from his local political group in the next Lower House election in an effort to promote tax cuts at the national level.

But in a Thursday interview, Kawamura, a former House of Representatives member who heads the group Genzei Nippon (tax cut Japan) declined to say whether he will run in the election himself.

"In the next House of Representatives election, we aim to field at least five candidates in single-seat constituencies in Aichi Prefecture," said Kawamura, who is also set to field a candidate in a Lower House by-election in the prefecture in April.

"To achieve tax cuts in Nagoya and in Aichi Prefecture, we will try to expand our influence at the national level."
