Sales of electric power to households by the 10 regional electric utilities in January rose 3.5 percent from the previous year to 34.08 billion kwh, the highest single-month level since comparable data became available in 1972, an industry body said Friday in a preliminary report.

The increase in sales was attributed to increased demand for heating as temperatures were lower than average for prolonged periods mainly in western Japan, the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan said.
