KUSHIRO (Kyodo) A local resident who is web-casting sunsets from Kushiro, Hokkaido, on his mobile phone is drawing attention to local claims that they are “one of the world’s three most scenic” and on a par with those in Manila and Indonesia’s Bali.
Hisanori Haga, a 50-year-old municipal employee, said more than 100 people view his cell phone TwitCasting streams of the sunset from Kushiro port. The streams, which last around 90 minutes and start just before sunset, are broadcast several times a week.
Sailors are apparently describing the view of the evening glow from the port as one of the world’s most beautiful, the Kushiro Municipal Government said.
The Kushiro Meteorological Observatory says the beauty of the “evening glow” in Kushiro is probably the result of varying levels of humidity over the sea.
The differing air masses refract the evening light like a prism, the observatory said.
The Kushiro government began distributing a leaflet in January listing the best times and viewing spots for the nightly spectacle.
