Akina Nakamori, a veteran pop singer who graced TV shows and dramas in the 1980s and 1990s, will suspend her activities due to fatigue and health problems, her agency said.

Nakamori, 45, has decided to take a rest "for the time being as her immune system has weakened as a result of the accumulation of fatigue," the agency said in a statement put up on its website Thursday, without disclosing further information, including identifying her malady.

Nakamori set herself apart from most pop idols by promoting herself as an aggressive performer after making her debut in 1982. She received the coveted Japan Record Award in 1985 and 1986. She was hospitalized after a suicide attempt in 1989.
