A helicopter crashed Sunday on a mountain on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, killing its two-man crew, police said.
Mechanic Shoji Miyake, 38, and pilot Yasuhisa Tanigawa, 47, died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Police said the chopper belonged to Tokyo-based Aero Asahi Corp. and that there were no other reports of casualties related to the 8:40 a.m. crash.
According to the Environment Ministry, the chopper was transporting building materials for bridge repair work on the island. The police are trying to determine whether the chopper was actually carrying the materials at the time of the accident.
