The infrastructure ministry plans to set up an "international" bureau to help companies win infrastructure and other construction contracts abroad, officials said Thursday.

The plan, which also involves consolidation of the policy and other relevant bureaus, will be the most ambitious attempt at reorganization by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry since 2001.

The move was devised at the behest of minister Seiji Maehara, who is leading an initiative to accelerate Japanese companies' advance into foreign markets.
