Apple Japan Inc. has failed to report 34 minor accidents involving older models of its iPod nano portable music player, the government said Thursday.

The accidents, including overheating during charging, caused no injury but should have been reported to the government-affiliated National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.

The announcement came after the Japanese unit of the U.S. computer giant Apple Inc. briefed METI Wednesday on accidents involving the product at home and abroad and on how to prevent such accidents.

In addition to the unreported accidents, METI has been aware there have been 27 incidents of the music player catching fire or overheating since November 2007, with four users suffering slight burns.
