Former pop star Noriko Sakai, who was convicted last year on a drug charge, has divorced, her former management firm, Sun Music Production, revealed Friday.
Her former husband, Yuichi Takaso, was likewise found guilty of possessing and using amphetamines and is believed to have introduced Sakai to the drug.
Last November, Sakai, 39, was sentenced to a suspended 1 1/2-year prison term for violating the antiamphetamine law.
The Tokyo District Court gave her a suspended sentence, citing her intention to divorce Takaso.
Sakai was convicted of taking the drug on Amamioshima Island, in Kagoshima Prefecture, on July 30 last year.
As a singer and actress, Sakai was popular both at home and abroad, particularly in China.
After her husband's arrest last August, she disappeared for about a week, fueling media speculation about her own drug use.
Sakai turned up at a Tokyo police station on Aug. 8 and later pleaded guilty at her trial.
