Twenty people died Saturday after exhibiting symptoms of heat exhaustion as sweltering temperatures prevailed nationwide.

The victims included 10 in Saitama Prefecture, three in Chiba Prefecture and one each in Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Mie prefectures.

Temperatures exceeded 35 degrees at more than 150 observation points, marking 38.6 in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, and 38.4 in Tatebayashi, Gunma Prefecture, according to the Meteorological Agency.

In Tochigi Prefecture, a 75-year-old woman collapsed while farming and died in a hospital.

Meanwhile relatives found an 89-year-old Gunma woman who lived alone dead in her wheelchair.
