Five people were killed, four children were in serious condition and a man was reported missing Monday in water-related accidents across Japan, officials said.

In Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, 6-year-old Jo Takahashi died after being swept away at the mouth of a river, while Tomonori Kawano, a 33-year-old company employee, drowned at Kasai Rinkai Park on the Tokyo waterfront.

Tomonori Kimura, a 17-year-old high school student, died after being hit by a small boat while swimming in the sea near a fishing port in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture.

Kazunori Saiin, 72, died after falling into a river while fishing in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. Norio Arai, 69, was killed in a similar accident in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture.

Two elementary school boys nearly drowned in rivers, one in Osaka Prefecture and the other in Tokyo, as did two junior high school students swimming at beaches in Aomori and Niigata prefectures.

A man believed to be in his 60s was reported missing after being spotted drowning at a beach in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
