The education ministry opened hearings Wednesday with experts and local government officials on how to improve education for foreign students in Japan.

In four hearings to be held by early February, the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry will ask 24 professors and local officials about the situation with foreign students, including Japanese-Brazilians, so it can find ways to provide a better education by the end of March.

One expert at the hearing argued that a major problem is Japan's educational guidelines because they do not clearly state how to educate foreign students. Another said it is necessary to make the public more aware of foreign residents' contributions to Japanese society.
