Defendants subject to trials under the lay judge system, which debuted in May, have surpassed 1,000, prosecutors said Friday.

The figure was 999 as of Nov. 30, according to a tally released Friday by the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office, but at least three cases have since been prosecuted in Chiba, Kyoto and Osaka, including Thursday’s indictment of a man over a fatal arson fire at an Osaka pachinko parlor.
