The government might raise the tobacco tax by around ¥3 per cigarette next year to "improve public health," lawmakers from the ruling party said Thursday.
That would bring the average price of a pack of cigarettes to around ¥360, which is still far below prices in the United States and Europe.
The tobacco tax last rose in fiscal 2006, when it climbed to ¥0.85 per cigarette.
