LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) The Hokubei Mainichi Newspaper, a Japanese-English daily serving Northern California since 1948, said in its Wednesday edition it will halt publication after Friday’s issue.

The paper said the decision was partly based on the shift in reader interest to the Internet and free papers. The Nichi Bei Times, a San Francisco-based daily aimed mainly at the local Japanese community, ceased printing after the Sept. 10 edition.
