Yukio Hatoyama on Tuesday offered Kokumin Shinto leader Shizuka Kamei the Cabinet post overseeing postal and financial affairs, a senior Democratic Party of Japan official said.

The offer came a few hours after an executive in Kokumin Shinto (People's New Party) said Kamei had already agreed to accept the post of defense minister.

Hatoyama also tapped Mizuho Fukushima, leader of the Social Democratic Party, another party that will form a coalition government with the DPJ, for the post of state minister in charge of consumer affairs, the declining birthrate, food safety and gender equality, party officials said.
