Japan Airlines Corp. said Friday it is negotiating with rival Nippon Cargo Airlines Co., a Nippon Yusen K.K. unit, to merge their freight operations next spring to turn JAL's cargo business around.

JAL, seeking to strengthen its performance after securing a large loan from government-linked and commercial lenders, said it envisions making its cargo business integration a pillar of the new restructuring program it aims to compile, possibly by the end of September.

Both airlines are keen to revive the profitability of their air freight operations via such steps as cutting the number of routes and flights, it said.
