Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. said Wednesday that group net profit in the April-June quarter fell 16 percent to ¥325.92 billion from the previous year as revenues dropped 3.5 percent to ¥2.50 trillion on higher competition in mobile phone services.

In the first quarter of fiscal 2009, NTT said its consolidated operating profit fell 12.4 percent to ¥325.77 billion.

The mobile phone service division saw a 15.2 percent fall in operating profit on a 7.3 percent revenue drop. The unit is the biggest shareholder in NTT DoCoMo Inc., the top mobile firm.

The long-range and international telecommunications division recorded a 10.8 percent drop in operating profit on a 1.1 percent revenue fall.

But the local telecommunication service division's operating profit surged 43.9 percent due chiefly to a reduction in business costs and depreciation costs.
