The government approved a bill Tuesday in a special Cabinet meeting for implementing North Korean cargo inspections called for in a recent U.N. resolution, officials said.

The bill was immediately submitted to the Diet. The ruling bloc of the Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito hope to see it passed this month.

Although the Democratic Party of Japan has expressed its intention to cooperate in deliberating the bill, its passage by the July 28 end of the current legislative session appears far from certain, given the possible dissolution of the Lower House for a general election.
