The House of Representatives unanimously adopted an amendment bill Tuesday to reduce summer bonuses for all Diet members by 20 percent this year.
The bill to amend the law regulating expenses and allowances for Diet members, which is also supported by the House of Councilors, looks set to clear the legislature by the end of this month.
The move follows the government’s decision to cut bonuses for public servants this summer by 10 percent in tandem with the hefty decline in summer bonuses expected in the private sector.
The amendment would reduce summer bonuses for most Diet members to about ¥2.4 million from ¥3 million last year.
