TAIPEI (Kyodo) Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui, at his doctor's advice, has canceled a visit to Japan planned for later this month, sources said Thursday.

They said Lee was recently hospitalized for lung problems and other ailments and is now convalescing at home.

It was to be his fifth visit to Japan since stepping down as president in 2000.

The 86-year-old Lee was to spend a week visiting Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui and Gifu prefectures as part of his quest to retrace beloved haiku poet Matsuo Basho's journey on foot in the 17th century that led to the famous travelogue "Oku no Hosomichi" ("Narrow Road to the Deep North").
